We are travelling round Europe for a few months and will be posting information about our progress here. We set off very early in the morning on 17th May 2012, (Eurotunnel at silly o'clock) and went to Calais, and "turned right !"  We have seen the Normandy Beaches and the Bayeux Tapestry, and the Alpine Meadows of Switzerland/Italy/Austria in flower. Follow our progress by checking out this website.

Check out this website:  www.ourtrip.co.uk.  Jason and Julie are a couple we met in Hamburg, and they keep their site updated daily (unlike us) so you can follow their adventures. There are also links to other websites for people having similar adventures, so we know we are not the only mad ones.

Lubbenau then Sachsenhausen.

Moved on to the Spreewald, a managed wetland area, and a well known tourist attraction in these parts. Managed to get on a boat tour of some of tour of some of the waterways. Very peaceful, with only the gentle splish of the punt, and the occasional quack of a duck, until we got to a busier...

Dresden to Berlin

01/08/2012 11:55
Feeling  a bit city´d out, so took a brief excursion to the Sachische Schweiz. This is an area of sandstone massif to the east of Dresden above the river Elbe, and has been known as a tourist attraction for a couple of hundred years. The Basteibrücke, an open walkway and bridges,...

Leipzig to Dresden

01/08/2012 11:19
After paying a remarkably cheap bill of 46E for 2 nights AND 3 return bus tickets for 2 people, we spent a while at the internet cafe in Leipzig, and found that this also was amazingly cheap: it cost all of 2E for 100 minutes! We went on the highly publicised red bus tour, which was not at all in...

Bad Lausick, Colditz and Leipzig.

18/07/2012 11:14
Our route from Plauen to Bad Lausick took us past the Goltzschtal bridge. The railway viaduct over the river, is the biggest brick built viaduct in the world, with a mere 26 million bricks, and 574m long, consisting of 81 arches. (No photos, sorry) While we were at Bad Lausick, we decided to...

Plauen

18/07/2012 11:03
Arrived at the aire on the outskirts of Plauen early Saturday afternoon, and decided to cycle in to the town and look round and find a church for tomorrow. We were surprised to find most of the shops and the TIC, shut Saturday afternoon, even the toyshop. After having found the catholic and...

Frankische Schweiz.

18/07/2012 10:38
We drove to Burg Rabenstein. Really impressive hilltop fortress, with over 800 years history. It forms one link of a chain of fortresses that spread from East to West Germany, including Coberg. Took a guidedd tour which unfortunately was in German, although he did his best to summarise the main...

Plossberg, Hof and Bayreuth.

18/07/2012 10:23
Found a lovely aire on a farm, and joined in with the animal feeding: cows, pigs, goats. Calves again being raised on milk diet. This place seems to be very family orientated, and the children at the Farm Guesthouse are encouraged to join in. Visited the local rodelbahn (toboggan run) which...

Passau to Rattenburg via Tittling, and Regensburg.

18/07/2012 10:08
We drove to Tittling which has an open air museum, very much in the fashion of the Weald and Downland. Numerous farm buildings, mills and houses typical of Bavaria. Some dated back several hundred years, and were still occupied until the 1970´s, when modern life and farming practices finally took...

Austria into Germany

06/07/2012 10:31
The route into Linz looked fiendins on the map, so we set the Sat Nav to find the TIC. It did. We drove into a pedestrian square with steps on one side. Interesting manouevres to get out, and weird looks from people enjoying their morning coffee at the many pavement cafes. We parked outside the...

Rossatzbach and Danube.

06/07/2012 10:17
Found an aire on the Danube cycle path, and took a leisurely cycle up river, past vineyards and apple and apricot trees. Stopped for tea annd bought some locally made "Marillen" (apricot) jam. This part of the Danube valley is a World Heritage site, the Wachau, and is very beautiful. There are...
