Passau to Rattenburg via Tittling, and Regensburg.

We drove to Tittling which has an open air museum, very much in the fashion of the Weald and Downland. Numerous farm buildings, mills and houses typical of Bavaria. Some dated back several hundred years, and were still occupied until the 1970´s, when modern life and farming practices finally took over from these old rustic ways. There were good displays of farming and domestic tools and equipment. We visited on a weekday so it was very quiet, but there are special displays and demonstrations throughout the year. Found our aire at Rattenburg after a couple of intersting false turns on the sat nav.

On to Regensburg the next day. Another historic town on the Danube. Cathedral was very much like Chichester, without the usual Rococo style decoration we have become used to seeing in this area. The donkey tower is still in place at the rear of the cathedral. This was used to raise stones to the upper levels during the construction. The cathedral architect is said to have thrown himself off the top of this tower after losing a bet that he would finish the cathedral before the bridge over the Danube was finished.

We visited the oldest Wurst Kitchen in Germany. All very well if you like Wurst.

Stayed overnight at a spa called Bad Abbach, and found an open air lido nearby, on an island in the Danube. This was a nice refreshing swim after the heat, but we were surprised to find it was actually river water, and was slightly slimy, and made walking on the concrete bottom a bit slippery.
