We are travelling round Europe for a few months and will be posting information about our progress here. We set off very early in the morning on 17th May 2012, (Eurotunnel at silly o'clock) and went to Calais, and "turned right !"  We have seen the Normandy Beaches and the Bayeux Tapestry, and the Alpine Meadows of Switzerland/Italy/Austria in flower. Follow our progress by checking out this website.

Check out this website:  www.ourtrip.co.uk.  Jason and Julie are a couple we met in Hamburg, and they keep their site updated daily (unlike us) so you can follow their adventures. There are also links to other websites for people having similar adventures, so we know we are not the only mad ones.

Oslo.

18/08/2012 10:16
Having reached out chosen aire in Oslo the next day, we cycled along good cycle tracks and pavements into the centre of the city (7km).  The TIC was not where the map said, but we did eventually find it. We got an up to date map and information about some museums. We spent most of the...

Rysstad to Busnesgrenda (south west of Oslo)

18/08/2012 10:06
We have seen a lot of swimming lake signs, so we must assume they are popular, even though we have only seen 2 groups of people swimming.  Our guide book tells us "do not swim in lakes marked `drinking water` " This part of Norway appears to be particularly remote, with few signs of...

Denmark to Norway.

17/08/2012 15:34
The rest of the drive in Denmark (from Aarhus to Hirthals) was very windy. This obviously had an effect on the state of the sea for the ferry crossing.   we went to buy a ferry ticket for Kristiansand, and were told the evening ferry was full, but we could go on the waiting list: so we...

Aarhus

17/08/2012 15:20
Moaning Minnie, as we have christened the Sat Nav, decided to get a spot of Danish Fever. She usually shows the amount of km to the destination, which reduces as we drive. Having started on 222km, it stayed on 213 for about 100km.  As we wanted to fasttrack through Denmark on the motorway,...

Schleswig

17/08/2012 13:06
The aire here was one of the most tightly packed we had been to, but the setting, on the lake, is lovely. We visited the cathedral: unlike many throughout northern Germany, it is very plain and simple. Highlights are: the 16th Century carved wooden altar, a larger than life size wooden figure...

Kiel and Rendsburg

17/08/2012 12:56
At Kiel, the Stellplatz was at a great spot on the canal, so we could see the big ships passing in and out of the lock. Boy, were they big! A sea lock enables ships to go up river towards Rendsburg (South of Kiel):  this is a massive construction, and we spent over an hour watching 2 ships...

Lubeck, Travemunde and Behrensdorf

17/08/2012 12:49
Lubeck Cathedral, another victim of war damage. Alongside the restoration was a reordering of the interior, and a glass screen placed across the nave to divide the space.  Art installation behind the screen, and chairs facing each other in the nave: services must be quite interesting. We...

Wittenbeck and Tessin.

17/08/2012 10:01
Wittenbeck really was a memorable aire. Having searched for the office to pay, and even asked at the bar, the "office " is actually run by a woman sitting in her car!  Then we heard a steam train, which stopped at the Stellplatz. It runs a scheduled service along the coast, and the level...

Neubrandenburg -Tessin- Rostock- Warnemunde

17/08/2012 09:48
We had intended cycling to the local Evangelical Church, but awoke to torrential rain. As there was a car park in the vicinity of the church, we decided to drive ther. We arrived in good time for the service: in fact we were the first ones in. Realising there was no pew sheet, we went to the...

Neubrandenburg.

01/08/2012 12:36
Neubrandenburg, in the brick gothic area of North Germany. is famous for its city walls and gates. The wall is about 2.5 km around, and four of the original gates are still standing, each with its own character. Unlike most city walls, there is no parapet around it: instead it has...
