We are travelling round Europe for a few months and will be posting information about our progress here. We set off very early in the morning on 17th May 2012, (Eurotunnel at silly o'clock) and went to Calais, and "turned right !"  We have seen the Normandy Beaches and the Bayeux Tapestry, and the Alpine Meadows of Switzerland/Italy/Austria in flower. Follow our progress by checking out this website.

Check out this website:  www.ourtrip.co.uk.  Jason and Julie are a couple we met in Hamburg, and they keep their site updated daily (unlike us) so you can follow their adventures. There are also links to other websites for people having similar adventures, so we know we are not the only mad ones.

Wine tasting in Albersweiler:Castles in Felsenland: France/Germany

02/10/2012 11:09
As we approached the village of Albersweiler, our next aire, we could see limestone rock outcrops sticking up among the trees. From the aire behind the vineyard, we had a lovely view across the vines and hills, with Trifelsburg ruins across the valley.  We were invited to taste some of the...

Korbach to Limburg, and Bingen

27/09/2012 11:13
We visited the Edersee - the dam here was built in 1914 and breached as part of the Dambusters raid in 1943, creating a hole in the wall 230 feet by 72 feet, causing extensive flooding.  The lake of the dam holds 44,000 million gallons of water, and the majority of this was released when it...

Hameln to Rinteln, Detmold, Bad Meinberg, Korbach

27/09/2012 10:51
As our onward route took us close to Rinteln, we thought we would go in search of the BMH (British Military Hospital) in Rinteln, as Geoff's youngest daughter was born there. We found the place, but all trace of the hospital, which was housed in a pre-war German barracks, is gone, and some rather...

Steinhorst to Hameln

27/09/2012 10:43
The obligatory re-reading of The Pied Piper of Hamelin by Robert Browning preceded our visit to this famous city.  Although the legend made Hamelin world famous, the city's wealth was due to its position as a trading centre on the river Weser.  Clever use of weirs and locks on the river...

At Steinhorst (2)

07/09/2012 13:50
Well, another excursion, this time to Celle, only about 25km away. Went to C & A (much in evidence here in Germany), and  chatted to a young English mum in another shop.  She´s an army wife, and there is quite a big army presence here. There is some talk of them moving out, but this...

At Steinhorst, Lower Saxony.

05/09/2012 14:53
Well, a chance to sleep in a full sized bed, use a shower that doesn´t come out in a dribble, and not have to light a gas that goes "pop" every time you go near it. Also, as this establishment has several Michelin stars, I can confirm the laundry facilties are excellent. We had an excursion to...

Soltau, southwards, to Steinhorst (near Celle)

05/09/2012 14:43
After leaving Soltau, we drove first to a privately owned Wolf Centre at Doeverden.  For our E11.00 entrance fee we could see wolf furs, a big display of wolves through the ages with a time line, and have a tour of the pens. Enormous enclosures had about 6 wolves in each, and the guide came...

In Hamburg (continued) and south to Soltau, (north of Celle)

05/09/2012 14:18
You can´t go to Hamburg without a visit to Miniature World.  Words can´t really describe this place: the detail is amazing, the scale of the place is monstrous. Every 15 minutes or so, it gets dark.  This is quite tricky, as it was really crowded in there, but the nighttime scenes give...

From Husum, south to Hamburg

05/09/2012 13:28
We drove South with Moaning Minnie. We would never have found the aire without the Sat Nav. Hamburg is a typical sort of inner city Stellplatz, wedged in between major roads, bridges and railway lines. It is also a depot for the sightseeing bus.  The chap in the kiosk told us to go and find...

From Ribe (Denmark) to Husum (Germany)

05/09/2012 13:09
We chose an aire for the night just inside Germany, but while we were driving down the last stretch along the West Coast of Denmark (Jutland), we thought we ought to visit at least one of the islands here on the Wadden Sea.  Romo is joined by a causeway accessible at all times, so we drove...
