Lyon

Had a long driving day - 213 miles on minor roads, scenery changing all the way. Started with flat arable farmland and straight roads, and ended up on wooded hillly roads, occasional hairpins for the first time.  After the Sat nav sent us up the wrong end of the village, up a road which disappeared off a precipice, we found the aire, tucked away next to the boules clubhouse. They get very excited about a game of boules here. I can`t imagine the local bowls club cheering in the same way. The next day we went into Lyon, parking up and cycling in, thinking, this is OK, it`s all downhill.  Found tourist centre, most helpful as they have been throughout. Got a freee city map, Found the cathedral, but the doors were locked! Took the funicular railway up to the Notre Dame de Fourniere: what an amazing and imposing place - looks old but only completed 1880. After touring inside of church, we thought we`d look at what seemed to be the crypt, but this turned out to be a separate church, as big as the one above it, and with lovely carvings and mosaics.
