We are travelling round Europe for a few months and will be posting information about our progress here. We set off very early in the morning on 17th May 2012, (Eurotunnel at silly o'clock) and went to Calais, and "turned right !"  We have seen the Normandy Beaches and the Bayeux Tapestry, and the Alpine Meadows of Switzerland/Italy/Austria in flower. Follow our progress by checking out this website.

Check out this website:  www.ourtrip.co.uk.  Jason and Julie are a couple we met in Hamburg, and they keep their site updated daily (unlike us) so you can follow their adventures. There are also links to other websites for people having similar adventures, so we know we are not the only mad ones.

Amsterdam to Ieper (Ypres)

18/01/2013 17:20
It had rained in the night, as predicted, so we were (briefly) stuck in the mud.  Actually finding we are getting quite good at getting out of a muddy spot, but more of that later on, perhaps. After asking where we can get rid of our grey water, it turns out there is no disposal on the whole...

Amsterdam

03/11/2012 10:58
We awoke to the sound of planes, which very considerately started at around 07.15, but then were mercilessly frequent. A heron outside on the pond kindly posed for photos, but the jay nearby was not so obliging. We asked at reception for information on how to get into Amsterdam, and were...

Belgium to Arnhem (Holland), on to Beekbergen (near Appeldoorn) and Oosterbeek to Amsterdam.

27/10/2012 18:21
Today was a bit of a marathon drive, crossing the border into the Netherlands, taking in Nijmegen then Arnhem. We stopped on the way at Venray (near Venloe) to see the war cemetery.  No parking was provided, so being rather large and needing to keep out of the way, we got quite well...

Arlon to Malmedy, (Westwards), Liege and Genk.

27/10/2012 10:53
Saturday, and we nipped across the border into Luxembourg first thing in the morning to get fuel, having found out the previous day that there is only one filling station in Arlon: it's a lot cheaper in Luxembourg, so everyone gets it there. We were a bit surprised to drive over the...

Douaumont National Cemetery, Ossuary, and Fort, and into Belgium

27/10/2012 09:08
Off to the national Cemetery and Ossuary at Douaumont, near Verdun (France). The Cemetery is vast, with 15000 graves, mostly French or French Colonial.  One section was muslim graves, whose headstones faced east, which puts them out of line with the other graves, and makes a poignant sight....

Moselle, Verdun.

25/10/2012 18:02
Our next aire was at Pont-a-Mousson, at a marina on the Moselle just north of Nancy. 3 Spaces left (hurrah) and even a privileged view of the typical European river barges going quietly by. Walking into the town we saw a memorial fountain for US ambulancemen who died in WW1.  Every town...

Eguisheim, Moselle, Rothau, and a boat lift

25/10/2012 17:21
The next morning, we thought we might use the swimming pool at the campsite, but as it was decidedly cool that day, we chickened out.  We visited the village of Eguisheim, which still nestles quietly within its circular walls.  Streets in concentric circles, enclosing a central...

Colmar, and a fruitless search

25/10/2012 10:24
Monday morning, and our bathroom tap sprung a leak.  So, what do we do now?  Madame Gueth kindly provided the name and address of a motorhome dealer about 15km to the south, so we headed off there first thing. Oh no, closed Monday morning, open at 2pm. We decided to continue...

Strasbourg to Obermorschwihr.

02/10/2012 12:04
Set off to Strasbourg for Church, and got there a bit early.  We parked in the street, and walked round to the Institute of Decorative Arts, which has ceramic tiles on the side, forming pictures. Got back to the bus to find a coach had knocked our drivers wing mirrors half off - luckily...

Strasbourg [Fortified city at the crossroads]

02/10/2012 11:38
We cycled into Strasbourg and managed to find the TIC and got a map: looked at the cathedral first - found it quite dark, partly because it is built of the local red sandstone, and only has natural light through very dark stained glass windows. We cut our visit short as they would be closing the...
